Jan Bang / CreaTeME

CreaTeME is a nationally awarded Centre of Excellence in the Creative Use of Technologies in Music Education at the University of Agder, Norway, led by Director Professor Daniel Norgård. The center’s success lies in its innovative approach to live electronics in its electronic BA, MA, and PhD programs at the Department of Popular Music. This approach focuses especially on how electronic music and the Live Remix method developed at the PUNKT festival are being used in an ensemble format. The Centre focuses on innovative teaching and research, aiming to develop new forms of student involvement and partnership.

Professor Jan Bang is a pioneer of Live Sampling and central in the development of Live Remix in an ensemble format. He is also the co-Artistic Director of the PUNKT festival, and a collaborator with Sidsel Endresen, Hamid Drake, Nils Petter Molvær, Arve Henriksen and the late Jon Hassell. The project leader for CreaTeME International is Associate Professor Ingolv Haaland. The aim is to collaborate through workshops with students and staff at partner universities. Over the next two years, a team from CreaTeME, led by Professor Bang, will travel to selected music education institutions all over the world. The goal of these collaborative workshops is to integrate electronic elements with any music genre, building the musicians of the future and contributing to mutual knowledge transfer and exchange between institutions.

Jan Bang is a Norwegian musician and record producer, known from several solo albums under his own name and collaborations over many years with musicians like Jon Hassell, David Sylvian, Ensemble Modern, Arve Henriksen, Nils Petter Molvær, Sly & Robbie, Tigran Hamasyan and Eivind Aarset.

He is one of Norway’s most accomplished and influential producers and the epithet electronics wizard has stayed with him for a long time and with good reason. Bang is the kind of musical innovator and bridge-builder who consistently manages to balance progressive thinking with popular appeal. He is always looking for ways of moving music and people forward, and by creating new meeting places and musical intersections.

Jan Bang has since 1986 collaborated with Erik Honoré. Together with Erik Honoré, he co-founded the Punkt festival in 2005 that has included performances from artists such as Brian Eno, Laurie Anderson, John Paul Jones and David Sylvian.
